Since 2015, Purple Chip™, a selection of Clokey’s purple sage, has been available to gardeners everywhere . Purple Chip™ offers a small (2-3 dm tall and 6-9 dm wide [ 6-12 in. tall and 2 to 3 ft. wide]), mat-forming, drought tolerant shrub. Each plant seasonal produces 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in.) of new growth along with a profusion of flowering branches each spring. Depending on variable climatic conditions, over-all bloom time can prolong for as much as three weeks. Additional garden interests include attractive rough and peeling bark on mature, woody branches, and grayish-blue spoon-shaped leaves. It will adapt well to landscape sites in full sun, where garden soils are naturally shallow, rocky or gravelly, Established plants need no more than two inches of monthly precipitation to remain vibrant in the landscape. Purple Chip™ offers blooms larger than the type, var. dorrii, and a prostrate habit, which until now, has not been available commercially for this species .
